Background of the Study
Hashtag activism has revolutionized the way Nigerians engage in political and social debates, particularly on Twitter. This study focuses on the impact of hashtag activism on phonetic features in Twitter audio trends, examining how vocal expressions and intonation patterns evolve during digital mobilization. Nigerian users, when engaging in hashtag activism, often employ distinctive phonetic markers that reflect regional accents, emotional emphasis, and rhetorical force (Chukwu, 2023). These vocal adaptations are not merely spontaneous; they serve as identity markers and as means to reinforce solidarity among activists. The study explores how digital audio content, such as voice tweets and audio threads, captures these phonetic variations and contributes to the broader discourse of social change. It also investigates the role of media technology in amplifying and disseminating these vocal patterns. As users leverage the power of voice to enhance their online activism, new phonetic features emerge that influence everyday speech patterns (Afolabi, 2024). This research seeks to document these changes and understand the interplay between digital activism and phonetic innovation, thereby providing a novel perspective on the evolution of spoken language in digital Nigerian discourse.

Statement of the Problem
While hashtag activism on Twitter is widespread, its influence on phonetic features remains underexplored. There is a lack of empirical evidence on how digital audio trends, influenced by hashtag campaigns, lead to changes in phonetic patterns among Nigerian users. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between digital activism and phonetic evolution. The study aims to fill this void by analyzing how hashtag-driven audio content modifies phonetic features, posing challenges to traditional phonetic norms (Ike, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine phonetic features in Twitter audio trends during hashtag activism.

  • To analyze the impact of hashtag activism on vocal expression and intonation.

  • To assess how digital activism influences traditional phonetic norms.

Research Questions

  • What phonetic features are evident in Twitter audio trends influenced by hashtag activism?

  • How does hashtag activism alter vocal expression among Nigerian users?

  • What are the broader implications for traditional phonetic norms?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the intersection between digital activism and phonetic evolution in Nigerian social media. It offers insights for linguists, digital media analysts, and activists by documenting how vocal expressions are reshaped through online mobilization, thereby enriching our understanding of language change in digital contexts (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing the phonetic features of Twitter audio trends influenced by hashtag activism in Nigeria. It does not extend to other forms of digital media or non-audio content.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetic Features: Characteristics of speech sounds, including accent, intonation, and pronunciation.

  • Hashtag Activism: The use of hashtags to promote social or political causes on digital platforms.
